Frequently Asked Questions
Pattern Room is designing now product all the time. Whilst a style might not be on the website at the moment if might be in the pipeline and very close. Use the Fit Finder to send us an image of your garment and we can let you know if it is available or close to being launched.
Our patterns are purchased as a perpetual lease with zero royalties. Use the pattern as many times as you want and pay nothing extra. Just don’t resell it, publish it or tweak it because then you’ll lose the brilliant fit
that makes it so great in the first place.
Not a problem at all. The first step is to buy a single size of the pattern that
you need. Test this in the fabric that you have. Check shrinkage of the fabric.
If you feel you need to discuss some changes, book a fitting and we can discuss on the call, make changes to the pattern that will be reflected in your graded pattern and tech pack.
But who knows, you might try the pattern the first time and love it and realise that as your confidence builds in pattern room that you won't need to think about alterations as a second stage.
Our patterns are available from Mens XS-8XL (USS XXS-7XL), Womens 6-28
(USA 2-24) and Kids 2-16.
There’s nothing more confusing – and annoying – than needing one size in one garment and a different size in another. Our patterns deliver consistent sizing across multiple garments, every time.
Over 30 years of pattern making and running a full-service pattern making business since 2009 for the fashion industry in Australia. I've worked on thousands of designs with designers and businesses. Just like you. It's not unusual for me to be in a fitting offering advice on how to get that the business owner was not aware could be done. We all know that specs don't work. They only give an indication for the shape that you're looking for, but it's up to the quality of the pattern maker to then translate those measurements into a garment that fits.
We've taken all our industry knowledge and pattern making experience with a passion for creating a system that makes it easier for you to find the patterns that you need.
You will receive your patterns by email. Your graphic designer will love our
easy-to-use, multi-platform digital patterns that work with multiple systems.
Patterns are available in DXF and AI, so can be used in Illustrator or CorelDRAW.
If you order a single size it will come with a make sheet. When you order a
graded pattern it will come with a full spec sheet.
We check every pattern before it is exported but for any reason there is a discrepancy, that's covered by our spec-match guarantee — if your pattern doesn't match your selection, we'll fix it.
Maybe they will, but with so many design combinations to
choose from, there is a smaller chance that you will choose the same thing.
Keep in mind, there are many things that make your offer unique, the fabric you
choose, the graphics you add, the
service you offer. And remember, no 2 bodies are the same, so no-one will ever
know they have the same pattern, they will just know it is a great fitting pattern.
Pattern Room is a starting point, not a finished design.
You're building your own combination from a library of design elements —
sleeves, necklines, lengths, trims — so no two brands end up with the same
garment.
Start with a single size in your own fabric, then book a fitting with Julia to walk through any changes before you commit to the full graded set. Every element in the builder has been refined over 30 years of industry pattern making.
Pattern Room doesn't offer returns. Each order is prepared to your specific selection rather than pulled from stock, so there's no refund and no restocking fee — there's no stock to restock. We recommend starting with a single size, sampling it in your own fabric, and booking a fitting with Julia before ordering the graded set — the same process as working with a traditional pattern maker. This is backed by our spec-match guarantee: if the files don't match your selection, we'll fix them.
We suggest you first watch the videos in hte How It Works section, then try a free trial pattern to test the files in your own system. Once you are happy with this, use Fit Finder to narrow down your style, order a single size pattern to test in your fabric then book a fitting with Julia. Once you are happy, then order your full graded set.
Unfortunately, no. Pattern Room only sells complete patterns, not individual pattern pieces. Adding one pattern piece from one style onto another is what we call "Frankensteining" a pattern — and it's a big no-go, and can end in a disaster even for people who know how to make patterns.
It might seem like a simple sleeve swap, but a good pattern is not just a collection of separate pieces. When a Pattern Room pattern is prepared, we check the full garment — every seam, every notch, every armhole, every sleeve head, and every size in the graded set. The sleeve needs to match the armhole, the shoulder shape, the body fit, the balance of the garment, and the grading across all sizes.
If a single piece is swapped into the wrong pattern, the garment may not sew together correctly, the fit may change, and the grading may no longer work. For this reason, we only sell full patterns that have been checked as a complete garment — this protects the quality of the pattern, your production process, and your reputation with your manufacturer.
Yes. The single-size pattern and graded pattern are purchased separately because they're used at different stages of the development process.
The single-size pattern lets you make a sample first, test the fit, check the style, and confirm the garment works for your fabric and customer before investing in a full graded set. You also have the option to book a fitting after making the single-size sample, so we can review the fit with you and make any adjustments before the pattern is graded.
This reduces the risk of paying for grading before the base pattern has been tested and approved. Once you're happy with the fit and style, you order the graded pattern set through the website — pricing is listed on each product page.
Once you know your fit and are able tp understand the key measurements on offer, you are able to order a graded set first off as many of our experienced clients do.
No because the process of buying a single size pattern offers different benefits to a graded pattern. As in a normal product development process, a single size pattern is used to check fit, shape, and your fabric. Once you are happy with this, you would then proceed to a graded pattern and tech pack. There is work involved in developing the single size pattern and the graded pattern which is why there is a fee associate with both of these separate stages.
As we travel around the world, we hear from every country, ‘that is so cheap!’
Sourcing a pattern the traditional way can take around 6 months and cost $800+.
Pattern Room provides your pattern within 48 hours at around half of the traditional cost, minus the freight fees and delays. But keep in mind, with 48 hour turn turnaround, this means you can say yes to the job that has walked through your door which is worth every cent.
Think of Pattern Room as a more convenient Pattern making
service, a pattern maker in your pocket rather than a sass subscription.
The value isn't in the file — it's in 30 years of knowing which elements belong
in the catalogue and how they perform in real production. Each order is also
prepared individually to your selection, not pulled from a pre-built library.
Yes — We offer 20% off the other categories in the same style. For example, when you order a men's style you can choose to order a women's and kids' when you purchase a full graded men's set at a 20% discount.
If you are about to order over 20 patterns at a time, let us know and we can discuss a discount.
No they do not- as every fabric shrinks in a different way. We have a blog to help you manage this process. Shrinkage in Custom Sportswear – Pattern Room
The website covers a wide range of sportswear, schoolwear, corporate, promotional and fashion styles — the best thing to do is send a photo of your garment using a fit finder. Unfortunately, this only works with physical garments and not images at the moment.
