Before you pay for a tech pack, read this

Free guide: 7 things the internet won't tell you about tech packs, and the step that actually gets your design made.

You've got a design. Maybe it's a sketch, an image you made with AI, or a garment you love and want to make your own. Everything you've googled says the same thing: get a tech pack.

Before you pay someone to make one (or make one yourself), see what happens next. A tech pack is a useful document. It's just not the first step. Written without a proven pattern behind it, it's a guesswork sheet, and your factory will faithfully reproduce every problem in it, in every size and every unit.

What's inside

  1. A tech pack doesn't make you ready for production
  2. More measurements can mean a worse fit
  3. Grading charts from the internet can't be matched
  4. A tech pack won't get you an accurate price
  5. Tech packs were invented for offshore factories, not for fit
  6. "Factory to source" only works if you're making thousands
  7. Construction details need to come from a pattern maker

Plus: what to do instead, pattern first and tech pack second, and your next step.

"It costs the same to make a garment whether the pattern fits or not."

If it doesn't fit, it won't sell.

"We ordered a pattern from you and it came in a few days. So the fact that we can delay purchasing something till we know it will sell is a huge financial saving for us. We can make 1 size up and only when we start getting orders do we buy the graded pattern... It is amazing for a small business."

Fit first, always.
